Another drawing of
Arnold's route along
the Kennebec. The
men had to paddle
against the current,
which was must
faster back then-now
dams along the river
have slowed it down.
A reproduction of
the kind of boat
used by Arnold's
men. The things
weighed about 400
pounds, and had
to be carried over
rapids and up and
down rocky hills.
It's a lot easier in a modern canoe. Here were are paddled along the
gentle-flowing river for a few miles.
We did most of the
trip by car-hey, we
only had two weeks of
vacation. The route
through Maine has
only a few rusty signs
like this one.
Even that @#$% Horatio
Gates gets a sign!
Once you cross the border into Canada,
there's all kinds of Arnold signage. There
are rivers named for Arnold, and hotels
and bars. (Auberge is French for inn.)
They're not ashamed to
celebrate Benedict Arnold, I
guess cause he's American, so
they don't have to feel
embarrassed by his treason.
